Back-up fullback Fred Smith has asked for his release from Michigan State and it has been granted according to the school.
Fred Smith entered Michigan State
as part of the Class of 2008 with much promise. After appearing in nine games as a freshman, Smith found himself redshirted for the 2009 season and in trouble by the end of the Spartans regular season as part of the residence hall fight.
After serving his punishment for the incident, Smith was reinstated to the program by head coach Mark Dantonio and made the move to fullback in the spring of 2010.
Smith was a Scout.com 4-star (#34 overall) wide receiver prospect out of Detroit (MI) Southeastern High School. It is not know where Smith will look to take his talents to finish out his career.
