Spartan 66 2011 Ranking #59

The Michigan State Spartans won a share of the Big Ten title in 2010. Last year, SpartanDigest.com looked in-depth at sixty-six Spartans and their importance to the team's success. We look at 66 Spartans as 1966 was the last time MSU won a National Championship. It is now time to look at the #59 ranked Spartan in 2011.

Derek Hoebing

SD 2011 Ranking : #59

Position: Tight End

Experience : Redshirt Sophomore

Strengths : Physical size

Weakness : On field experience and being behind three top tight ends

Hoebing is a player to keep an eye on in 2011. Behind three other top tight ends, Hoebing will have to get some seasoning as the Spartans lose two tight ends (Celek – Linthicum) after this season. However, he is also on the verge of a possible position move to offensive tackle in our opinion.

Overall:In other programs the Ohio native may already be on the field. However, Michigan State has a load of talent at the tight end position. Nevertheless, you have to look for Hoebing to get reps and there is always concern for injury to one of the other tight ends that would push Derek up the depth chart.

Why He Made The List:One injury away from being in the Spartans rotation at tight end is the main reason for Hoebing making the list. At 6-foot-7, 265-pounds, Hoebing is only behind Dion Sims in size at the tight end position. Is a move to offensive tackle that far off in the future?
