Ohio 2013 QB Talks Spartans Camp

For Malik Zaire his camping experience at Michigan State was another day of working on his game and hoping to give Spartan coaches an early look at his abilities. Spartan Digest spoke with Zaire about his experience.

While Michigan State has their quarterback needs already filled with the pledge of Tyler O'Connor, they are looking ahead for the next recruiting class and Kettering (Ohio) signal caller Malik Zaire was hoping to show his skill set and get some interest from the Big Ten champs. How did his day go?

"I went up to Michigan State and met the coaches and everything and got a pretty good workout in. I started out pretty slow and sluggish, but picked it up when we started competing and doing 7x7 and things like that."

While his main recruiter is Spartans defensive back coach Harlon Barnett, Zaire spent his day with Spartans quarterback coach Dave Warner.

"I spent the majority of time with Coach Warner in the drills we did and then when we started doing team and I took a lot of reps in that.

"Coach Warner said I did pretty well by showing my talents and everything I had to offer."

Zaire made sure to check out some of the Spartans facilities and came away impressed.

"I did get a chance to look at the weight room and the rest of the facilities and they are really nice."

Malik saw firsthand how the Spartans staff treats one of their top prospects.

"They had Tyler O'Connor there for camp and he was getting a lot of love from the coaches. It was good to see."

While Malik has picked up an early offer from Cincinnati, where would the Spartans be if they offered?

"Michigan State is a school that would be on the map if they would offer me. I like the coaches and they would be someone I would have to think about."

Zaire's summer is now looking forward to having a strong year as the starting quarterback for the Knights. How are things going with just a little over a month to go?

"We just got done with our final 7x7 today. We did very well there winning all of our games. We did get a good look at what our team is going to be like this year. We are getting ready for our team camp towards the end of the month.

Zaire attended several camps this summer including the Nike, Elite 11, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan State. He hopes the early looks will give him a chance to speed up his recruitment.
