More of Edmondson on the Spartans

The newest member of Michigan State's recruiting class gave Spartan Digest more details on why the Spartans earned his pledge.

We wrote earlier about Canton (Ohio) McKinley High School defensive back Jermaine Edmondson giving the Michigan State Spartans his verbal commitment to be part of the class of 2012. Now we did a little deeper into why the Spartans won in the end.

The first thing new Spartan commitment Jermaine Edmondson said when asked if there was any breaking news with his recruitment was yes and then he laughed. Next he told Spartan Digest why the Spartans were the team for him.

"I've committed to Michigan State. I sat down and talked with my dad and looked at all the negatives and positives of each program and Michigan State came out on top of it. They are an up and coming program and they are close to home. I also have a teammate in Se'Von Pittman going there."

How much of a factor was Pittman in his decision?

"It was not a big factor but it was a plus."

One thing the 6-foot-, 170-pound defensive back can say about his commitment is he earned it.

"Yes, I worked hard for it by going to camp and showing the coaches what I could do."

In the end the way the Spartans coaching staff made him feel won out over the completion for his services.

"The coaching staff is great and they took good care of me during camp and told me to just hang in there as I waited for the offer. I just felt like I was at home and felt comfortable there and I don't think there is any other college for me other than Michigan State."

Who did Jermaine look at in the end?

"It came down to Michigan State, Nebraska and Louisville with Michigan State being so close to home it was a great fit."

When we spoke with Jermaine we caught him watching his future head coach Mark Dantonio at Big Ten media day.

"I've not talked with Coach Dantonio yet but I've talked with Coach Barnett and coach Narduzzi. They were really happy and I'm watching coach Dantonio right now on television. I'm sure I'll be talking with him later today."

While Jermaine will be joined in East Lansing with Se'Von Pittman, there is a future game he hopes to see happen as another former teammate Steve Miller is now with Ohio State.

"I hope we get a chance to play against him. It will be a good competition for us and Steve down the road."
