Fine Michigan DL - Vernon Gholston

Detroit's Vernon Gholston was one of the top performers at the (Ann Arbor) Nike Camp but he'll need to prove he can get the job done on the football field in 2003.

The most intriguing prospect at the Ann Arbor Nike Camp had to be Detroit (Cass Tech) defensive end, Vernon Gholston.

Gholston had all the measurables that college recruiters look for. He stood 6-foot-3, weighed in at 240-pounds. Vernon looked rock solid and he ran a blazing 4.4 40-yard dash.

The big question that will need to be answered is whether or not Gholston is a football player.

Last year, Vernon was used as an offensive guard and he was only used sparingly at defensive end. 2003 will be a big year for Gholston.

"I'm going to be playing a lot of defense this year." Gholston said. "My junior year, I played guard and I was also hurt most of the year with a sprained ankle. I played defensive end for only two games.

"As far as offers go, Michigan told me they want me to play for them, I don't know if you consider that an offer. Michigan State, Iowa, Central Michigan and Western Michigan have also offered.

"Iowa is the only school that has called so far.

"My leaders are Michigan and Miami. Those schools are tied right now. I also like the other schools that have offered me.

"I'm going to be camping at Michigan and Miami this summer."

Gholston will be a three-year varsity starter in 2003.
