Big Ten Rewind: Week Three

The Big Ten had a rough weekend as ranked teams Ohio State and Michigan State both fell in road games. However, the Buckeyes and Spartans were not the only teams that found opponents looking to make a name against their Big Ten opponents.

Illinois – With a 17-14 victory over Arizona State, Illinois moved to 3-0 on the season as was rewarded with a stop in the Top 25 (#24) for the first time since 2008. Quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase finished with 135 yards passing and 67 more on the ground in the victory. While the win was big for the Illini and the Big Ten, it was not an overall great performance by either team. Next Game: Western Michigan

Indiana – The Hoosiers posted their first win of the season and first for new head coach Kevin Wilson during a 38-21 win over South Carolina State on Saturday. Quarterback Edward Wright-Baker threw for two touchdowns as the Hoosiers rushed for 271 yards and three more scored in the win. Next Game: North Texas

Iowa – The Hawkeyes rallied behind the passing of quarterback James Vandenberg in a 31-27 come from behind victory over Pittsburgh. Iowa trailed 27-10 in the fourth quarter before allowing the junior quarterback to start lighting up the skies leaving new ACC member Pitt stunned with the outcome. Next Game: Louisiana-Monroe

Michigan – The Wolverines looked to quarterback Denard Robinson who ran for 198 yards and accounted for three touchdowns in their 31-3 win over Eastern Michigan. Michigan looked flat against the Eagles before turning things into gear for the blowout win. Next Game: San Diego State

Michigan State – The Spartans fell to Notre Dame 31-15 as their offense struggled to run the football and their special teams had two miscues. Known for their running attack, Michigan State saw quarterback Kirk Cousins throw 53 times completing 34 of them for 329 yards. Next Game: Central Michigan

Minnesota – The Golden Gophers survived a scare at the hands of Miami (Ohio) 29-23 as safety Kim Royston knocked away a last second pass from RedHawks quarterback Zac Dysert. MarQueis Gray led Minnesota with 334 total offensive yards in head coach Jerry Kill's first victory at the school. Next Game: North Dakota State

Nebraska – The Huskers moved to 3-0 on the season with a 51-38 win over Washington. Quarterback Taylor Martinez threw for 155 yards and two touchdowns while running for a third in the victory. Next Game: Wyoming

Northwestern – The Wildcats were again without quarterback Dan Persa who continues to be sidelined with an Achilles tendon injury. Over all Northwestern struggled against Army as quarterback Kain Colter struggled before being pulled in the fourth quarter. However, it was too late and the Black Knights earned their first victory of the season 21-14 over the Persa-less Wildcats. Next Game: 10/1 – Illinois

Ohio State – The Buckeyes suffered their first loss of the season 24-6 against Miami on the road. Offensively the Buckeyes struggled as quarterbacks Joe Bauserman and Braxton Miller combined for only 35 yards passing on the night. The loss moved Ohio State out of The Associated Press college football rankings for the first time in nearly seven years. Next Game: Colorado

Penn State – The Nittany Lions survived a major scare at the hands of Temple before pulling out a 14-10 victory over the Owls. Michael Zordich scored on a 1-yard run with 2:42 left in the game to push Joe Paterno's team to the win. Next Game: Eastern Michigan

Purdue – The Boilermakers rushed for 393 yards and posted 627 yards of total offense in their 59-0 win against Southeast Missouri State in what Southeast coach Tony Samuel said was a money game for his program. The win moved Danny Hope's team to 2-1 on the year as they'll take a week off before taking on Notre Dame. Next Game: 10/1 - Notre Dame

Wisconsin – The Badgers look to be the early favorite in the Big Ten as they defeated Northern Illinois 49-7 to move to 3-0 on the year. Quarterback Russell Wilson was the star as he threw for 347 yards and three scores as the Badgers won their 31-st straight regular season game over a non-conference opponent. Next Game: South Dakota
