First Look: Georgia Defense

We take a look at the Georgia Bulldogs defense as we get closer to kickoff of the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida.

Michigan State will battle a Georgia team coming off a 42-10 loss in the SEC Championship against LSU. Despite the loss the Bulldogs had some impressive performances during the 2011 season.

Defensive Starters Returned at Start of the Season

N - DeAngelo Tyson: Started 11 games posting 20 total tackles with 3.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks to go with 11 quarterback pressures.

DE - Abry Jones: Started 13 games posting 45 total tackles with 7 for loss and 4 sacks to go with 19 quarterback pressures.

ILB – Christian Robinson: Played in 11 games starting three in 2011. Posted 37 total tackles with 5.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks to go with 4 quarterback hurries.

CB – Brandon Boykin: Started 13 games posting 48 total tackles with 9 tackles for loss and 3 interceptions.

CB – Sanders Commings: Started 13 games posting 48 total tackles with 4 tackles for loss, 1 sack and 1 interception.

SS – Alex Ogletree: Started 7 games posting 39 total tackles with 5.5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks.

FS – Bacarri Rambo: Started 12 games posting 52 total tackles with 1 tackle for loss and 7 interceptions for 149 return yards. Earned First Team All-SEC honors in 2011.

Top Defensive Performer: Jarvis Jones – Posted a team leading 69 total tackles in 2011 with 19.5 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks while recording 42 quarterback pressures earning unanimous First Team All-SEC honors from the Associated Press.

Most Points Given Up In Game: 45 at home against South Carolina

Least Points Given Up In Game: 0 at home against Coastal Carolina

Defensive Coordinator: Todd Grantham

Grantham was named defensive coordinator at Georgia in January, 2009, after serving an 11-year NFL career with stops in Dallas, Cleveland, Houston, and Indianapolis.

Prior to heading to the NFL, Grantham worked at the college level serving three seasons as the defensive line coach and one as assistant head coach at Michigan State (1996-98). Grantham also worked six seasons (1990-95) at his alma mater, Virginia Tech, coaching defensive ends, inside linebackers, and defensive tackles.
