Big Five Stories In 2011 #3

As 2011 comes to an end, we start to look back at the past year and the Big Five Stories in Michigan State athletics. We continue with #3.

The 2010-11 season was a success for Suzy Merchant and the Michigan State Spartans Women's basketball team as they won their first outright Big Ten Championship and earned the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. In the tournament the Spartans would fall to Ohio State in the semifinals.

When the NCAA Tournament was selected the Spartans received a No. 4 seed in the Dallas Region where they played Northern Iowa. The team held on to win their first round game; however, in the second round they feel 65-56 to Green Bay ending their season.

Kalisha Keane earned AP All-American honors to go with Big Ten coaches naming her Big Ten Player of the Year. Suzy Merchant was named Big Ten Coach of the Year while Lykendra Johnson was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

The program was also honored by the NCAA winning the 2010-11 NCAA Pack the House Challenge when 14,797 fans showed up for a contest against rival Michigan.
