As 2011 comes to an end, we start to look back at the past year and the Big Five Stories in Michigan State athletics. We continue with #2.
Spartans Baseball enjoyed a great 2011 season winning a share of the Big Ten Championship and earning a No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. The Spartans came up short against No. 1 seed Illinois
in the tournament, but won their first Big Ten regular-season title since 1979.
A couple of Spartans enjoyed great seasons as Jeff Holm earned Big Ten Player of the Year, Kurt Wunderlich was named Pitcher of the Year, and Jake Boss was named Coach of the Year.
Six Spartans were named to the All-Big Ten First Team joining Holm and Wunderlich as Ryan Jones, Torsten Boss, Tony Bucciferro, and Brandon Eckerle also earned the honor. Eckerle also set an MSU single-season record with 94 hits on the season.
Jared Hook and Tony Wieber landed third team honors while Joel Fisher and David Garner made the All-Freshman Team.
