Official Visit Primer

This weekend will be a light one for the Spartans as for official visitors. However, it does not mean the weekend is not important as the one player taking his official has the Spartans in his final three.

Top football prospects from across the country are counting down the day until National Signing Day and taking their final official visits in the coming weeks.

For Michigan State, this weekend brings one official visitor at a new key position tight end.

J.P. Holtz

Position : Tight End

School : Pittsburgh (Pa.) Shaler Area HS

Height : 6'4

Weight :235 lbs.

Scout.com Position Rank : #10 Tight End (Four-Star)

Schools under consideration : Purdue, Pittsburgh, Michigan State

What this visit means :

The former Penn State pledge has not heard from the Nittany Lions since they named a new head coach. However, Pittsburgh's new head man Paul Chryst has made Holtz a top target and likes him as a tight end instead of a defensive player like former Panthers head coach Top Graham.

Purdue is in the running, however, Holtz has already taken his official visit there and many feel this battle is between the Spartans and Panthers making this weekend's visit key for the Spartans to reach the top spot by National Signing Day.

The Spartans did not need a tight end a couple of months ago but have found a need as they are expected to lose one before spring. Holtz is a safe recruit who could play on either side of the ball if needed and that has to help his stock with the Spartans.

With coaching stability and the success the Spartans have enjoyed the past two seasons, Holtz knows the program is solid and headed in the right direction.
