SD Quick Take: Nick Tompkins

With National Signing Day this week, we continue looking at those players who have given the Spartans a verbal pledge. Here is Spartan Digest take on Nick Tompkins.

Michigan State wanted one top running back in the class of 2012 and found him in Nick Tompkins of Snellville (GA) Brookwood High School.

Here is a quick look at why Tompkins will be expected to be a major back for the Spartans early in his career.

There will be no pressure for Tompkins to come in and contribute early in his career at Michigan State as the Spartans have three solid running back ready for the 2012 season. Tompkins will fit right in with the Spartans offense as he's been an I-Back and has also taken snaps in the spread out of the shotgun. Not only does Tompkins look to get his shoulders squared, he also shows the ability to come out of the backfield to catch the ball much like Le'Veon Bell.

Mark Dantonio may look to give Tompkins snaps this fall if he feels there is a chance of losing senior Larry Caper along with fast rising star Bell who some feel will have a chance to leave early.

Some may question why a running back out of Georgia made the decision to go north for his college career when SEC programs seem more of a fit. Keep in mind the south was loaded at running back in this class and Tompkins was still considered one of the Top 15 backs coming out of the region. On the field Tompkins will need to rid himself of a little stutter step he uses on almost every run.

Going into recruiting the class of 2012 the Spartans knew they needed only one running back. Because of this they lost out on a couple of other backs that would have been solid pickups to team with Tompkins in future years.

With Edwin Baker leaving MSU early, Tompkins goes from surefire redshirt to possible player on the field. With three solid back ahead of him, pressure will be light on the Spartans staff to play in 2012. However, there is already talk Bell could look to leave MSU early after next season.

Spartan Digest loves the pickup and is still holding out hope a second back can be added to the class at the last minute.
