Scout.com National Recruiting Analyst Bob Lichtenfels has covered the Jeannette (Pa.) High School four-star safety throughout his prep career and gave some insight as to why the Spartans beat out Ohio State, Penn State, Notre Dame and Wisconsin.
"Michigan State has been in the lead for a longtime," stated Lichtenfels. "The main reason was the stability of the coaching staff as they hadn't loss a member of the staff this year."
Digging deeper Lichtenfels talked about the main selling points the Spartans offered the talented Cox.
"Demetrious felt very comfortable on his official visit and liked everything about it," he continued. "He feels he can play early and feels Michigan State will be a winning program in the Big Ten for a long time.
"The biggest impression was made a couple of weeks ago as several members of the coaching staff visited for their in-home visit and met and won over Demetrious's grandma."
While Lichtenfels had predicted Cox to the Spartans, other programs took their turns in trying to sway him away from the Green & White.
"Demetrious, his father Dorsey Cox and brother Michael Theys traveled all over the country the past two years," said Lichtenfels. "Dad and brother would alternate the trips as they checked out almost every school they could.
"There was serious considerations given to Ohio State, however, he didn't get the right vibe from one of their coaches. Penn State had the last in-home visit and made a run but it was just too much to overcome in the end."
