Spartan Report Card: 2012 Offense Line

The 2012 Michigan State recruiting class is in the book. We take a look back at those who signed with the Spartans and hand out our grades for the offensive side of the ball starting with the offensive line.

How did Mark Dantonio and his staff do in adding depth and playmakers to the Spartans offense? Here are my grades for the offensive line.

Offensive Line

Zach Higgins / Alliance (OH) Marlington HS - #50 Ranked OG

Benny McGowan / Centerville (OH) HS - #33 Ranked OG

Kodi Kieler / Gibraltar (MI) Oscar A. Carlson HS. - #74 Ranked OT

The Spartans signed three players along the offensive line hitting both guard and tackle in the class.

Out of the three McGowan may be the one most ready to battle as he played in one of the top high school conferences in the state of Ohio and has the physical size and skill to match-up with anyone. However, we fully expect McGowan to redshirt as he learns more about pass protection as he comes from a program that ran the triple option.

Higgins was an early offer as the Spartans were looking for tough hardnosed interior players in the class. Make no mistake the Spartans got what they were looking for in Higgins as he's tough and willing to battle for every inch. There will be work needed as Higgins will have to make adjustments to the speed of the college game and like his running mate McGowan, must work on pass protection.

Kieler is a player who brings great promise as he's got the size the Spartans like for the edge. We also expect Kieler to redshirt and get a year under his belt before being thrown into action.

All three players are solid role players who will develop in the Spartans program to have a chance to contribute at a high level. Because of the depth of young players already on the roster all three should have a chance to reshape their body in the Spartans strength program and be ready to push for playing time come spring of 2013.

If the Spartans could have landed a major tackle talent in the class this would be a great haul. However, we still like this group and give the Spartans a solid grade when looking at the group as a whole. Grade: B-
