Spartan Report Card: 2012 Quarterback

The 2012 Michigan State recruiting class is in the book. We take a look back at those who signed with the Spartans and hand out our grades for the offensive side of the ball. Next we look at the quarterback position.

How did Mark Dantonio and his staff address the loss of Kirk Cousins? We grade the newest quarterback who will wear the Green & White.

Tyler O'Connor / Lima (OH) Central Catholic HS – #23 Ranked QB

If not for a guy named Maty Mauk (Ohio's Mr. Football) you might have heard more about O'Connor during the recruiting process. O'Connor was not one to look for the limelight during the process but showed well during the Elite 11 Quarterback event to turn several heads.

While there are no expectations for the Ohio native to take the field in 2012, he should be considered a player who will travel with the team gaining much needed knowledge in the process.

Overall we feel O'Connor will redshirt unless there is disaster at the quarterback position. By the spring of 2013 he'll be battling for a back-up role and could prove to be the front runner as Andrew Maxwell's successor.

We really like what we've seen out of O'Connor as a complete quarterback prospect. Good physical size and the ability to move the pocket gives him a chance to be a top level signal caller. There will be some adjustments needed but he's proven to be a quick learner and has solid mechanics. Grade: A+
