Last season started with much promise for Michigan State red-shirt freshman Skyler Burkland as he earned the starting spot at right tackle and wasn't looking back. However, much changed after a season ending injury during the Notre Dame game.
While the Spartans were able to survive the remainder of the season, Burkland lost serious development time and showed some rustiness during the spring game.
One good thing that came out of the injury was the development of Fou Fonoti as a player and leader. Fononti has now claimed the right tackle spot allowing Burkland to move to his more natural position left tackle.
While the Spartans have depth along the line we feel any loss of time by the Ohio native could take away from the success of the line as a whole and the reason Burkland earned a No. 8 spot as an indispensable Spartan.
