Salmon, whose got the physical skills to compete early in his career, is almost sold on the Spartans being his future destination.
"I've learned that Michigan State is the place to be," said Salmon. "From the recruits, the committees and from the coaches, it's just been fantastic to be considered to be in their recruiting class.
"I look at their facilities all the time and look them up on You Tube all the time. Everything about Spartan Nation is fantastic."
From watching the Spartans on television, Salmon clearly can see himself in the Green & White.
"I really can see myself playing in their defense," said Salmon. "They see me filling the shoes of a guy like Jerel Worthy as the strength of my game is my violent hands and quick feet. I need to work on my hips but other than that everything is perfect."
How close is Salmon away from making his decision?
"I'm getting close to making a decision," said Salmon. "I've built a great relationship with (assistant) coach (Harlon) Barnett. We talk every single week and every time we talk it's about how great Michigan State is. It's like he's my uncle and I'm his nephew. We talk every single week so we have a great relationship and every time we talk it's just amazing.
"I hope to speak with coach (Mark) Dantonio soon after he returns from vacation and get confirmation that he would take my commitment without me having visited yet. I hope to visit on September 15 for the Notre Dame game, but I don't know if I want to wait that long."
Depending upon what happens when Salmon speaks with coach Dantonio could determine if the Spartans add another member to the 2013 recruiting class. We will continue to keep in touch with Devyn about his recruiting progress.
