Faces In The Crowd
For Malik Hairstons morning game, a quick scan of the gym produced the likes of Tommy Amaker, Jim OBrien, Ben Howland, Tom Izzo and assistants from Kansas and Ohio State. You know you are a big time recruit when youre injured and coaches come specifically to watch your team just to be seen by you. Watching Alexander Kaun watch his team play was Izzo and Billy Donovan.
South Carolina head coach Dave Odom was in the gym watching RaSean Dickey and Zam Frederick. Tyler Hansbrough is pretty much drawing the biggest crowds at this event. Among the head coaches on the sidelines were Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams, Quin Snyder, Bill Self, Billy Donovan, Tom Izzo and Mike Brey. Paul Hewitt joined Dave Odom in a morning viewing of Zam Frederick and two Kentucky assistants were also in the crowd.
Rick Barnes was front and center for Daniel Gibsons games today. Russell Robinson can pack them in. Jim Calhoun, Bill Self, Tubby Smith and numerous assistants headlined a stellar group of suitors. Ball State head coach Tim Buckley was on Cyrus Tate patrol again today. For DeAaron Williams, Quin Snyder and Bo Ryan of Wisconsin graced the sidelines.
News & Notes:
You just know this list is going to get much longer before it gets shorter. Andrew Brackmans current list reads Butler, Dayton, Cincinnati and Ohio U. The possibilities for his list the next time we speak are endless. Alexander Kaun is down to Michigan, Michigan State, Kansas, Florida and Duke. Channing Toney had to take a test today but will return to action tomorrow for the Georgia Stars.
Word on the streets say Illinois Warriors point guard Justin Dentman could wind up at either Dayton or South Florida. Both head coaches were in the building in the evening session. Fashion Trends: baseball caps. The college coaches are wearing them in full force this year. Go figure. Cyrus Tate likes Purdue, Ball State, Dayton, South Florida, Northern Illinois and Southern Illinois. DeAaron Williams is going to see how the month ends but he favors DePaul and Wisconsin right now and they are the two schools recruiting him the hardest. Both were in the gym on Tuesday.
All-Ohio guard Brian Roberts was smokin 3s in the first half of the game against The Family. We hear a lot of schools recruiting him as a point guard. Why? This guy is a shooter by trade and a good one at the mid-major level. Stock riser: Marcus Crenshaw of The Family. The guy is quick, defends and hes making shots. The mid-majors love him. Malik Hairston does a lot of things well, but the one-handed rebounds in traffic really get your attention.
Jason Rich is a versatile guy. Hell play as many as four positions for Nike Team Florida. Andrew Reed, a mid-major post man, is making headlines with his athleticism. NorCal guard Trae Clark does an excellent job of finding guys. BABCs Charles Burch is a blue-collar player. Hes slightly undersized but hes bringing it all the time. Gerry Corcoran is having some trouble. Teams are really getting out and guarding him hard on the catch and hes not nearly the shooter if you make him bounce it.
Julian Wright of the Illinois Warriors is so athletic and fast that he sometimes gets ahead of himself. Hes ultra-talented and is a legit 3-man target. We understand that Darnell Jackson fared well against Brian Johnson in a game we didnt see. Its time we start classifying Vernon Macklin properly. After seeing him numerous times this spring and summer, hes looking more and more like hes going to be a small forward rather than a power forward. Hes athletic enough to pull it off and theres little doubt hes more comfortable on the wing than inside.
