Last Look Back Defense: Notre Dame

We take one last look at Saturday's loss to Notre Dame looking at each position on the defensive side of the ball.

Each week we'll take a look back at each side of the football from the previous game before moving on to the next one. The Spartans defense showed it was human Saturday night as they gave up their first two touchdowns on the season against Notre Dame.

We're sure you'll find our grade card reflecting the failures and success of the defense as a group.

While the defense was able to post six quarterback hurries, it only posted one sack against Notre Dame on Saturday night and that came from cornerback Johnny Adams. However, it was the defensive line that posted the majority of the pressures as Shilique Calhoun, Denzel Drone, Anthony Rashad White and James Kittredge each posted one. Marcus Rush was a bright spot posting six tackles with two being for loss. It will be interesting to hear more and to see how Rush is doing as he left the game with an injury.

The linebackers continue to be consistent as Chris Norman, Denicos Allen and Max Bullough combined for 17 tackles (only a half a tackle for loss) on the day. Missed chanced on getting a turnover hurt when you look back and could have given the Spartans the boost it needed.

The Irish lace a true big play receiver and have looked to Tyler Eifert. The Spartans stopped Eifert except on a big pass interference against the tight end by Adams. But allowed other on several plays to beat them deep. If not for poor throws, things could have been real ugly. Darqueze Dennard posted six tackles and Adams posted the team's only sack. But overall, this was not a great performance by a group many consider to be one of the best in the country.
