Drake Feels The Spartan Spirit

Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech linebacker Deon Drake visited Michigan State during the Boise State game a few weeks ago. On Sunday, Drake made his verbal pledge to Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio and talks about his commitment with SpartanDigest.com.

Since receiving a scholarship offer from Michigan State, Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech linebacker Deon Drake and his father have looked over a handful of early offers and had seen enough to make an early pledge to be a Spartan.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Drake also held offers from Cincinnati, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and others. But found the Spartan Spirit to his liking.

"The atmosphere at the Boise State game and the school spirit was great," said Drake. "And the education really sold me on Michigan State. My father and I woke up this morning and have talked about this for a long time since I received my offer and knew this was the best thing for us to do."

Another thing that impressed Drake was the personal touch given by Mark Dantonio and his coaching staff.

"When I visited Coach Dantonio he told me out of the 2014 class that I was one of the top guys he wanted in the class," explained Drake. "Coach Terrence Samuel has been my main recruiting coach and the relationship I've been building with him is good.

"I've not been able to constantly talk with coach Samuel as our coach, Tom Wilcher has been keeping us busy with our team. But we have great conversations and I've received a lot of letters from each member of the coaching staff all saying how they are all happy they offered me and have just been waiting on my commitment."

Overall, Drake feels he's found the perfect fit as a future Spartan.

"It's a great fit," said Drake. "The education is great, the football is great, and being at the stadium during the Boise State game was great as I was able to see their defense make some great plays. I could picture myself being a big impact player there. I like how the linebackers play as they are disciplined and I like how they read the offensive line. The coaches see me at the SAM linebacker position."

Sunday morning allowed Drake to official make his pledge.

"I spoke with coach Samuel after the game," said Drake. "He said coach Dantonio was ready for me to commit. So I spoke with him this morning and he was very glad and excited to have me. He also said he couldn't wait to see me next week at the Ohio State game."
