Geiger Wasted Little Time

Toledo (Ohio) Ottawa Hills kicker Michael Geiger wasted little time in giving Mark Dantonio his verbal pledge this past weekend.

After being a longtime pledge to Boston College kicker Michael Geiger's path to Michigan State could be one Spartan fans talk about in the coming years.

How did Geiger go from early pledge to making a change and becoming a Spartan?

"I went to their camp in June and they knew about me before their camp," said Geiger. "I had a lights out performance and did very well and they told me they were very impressed by me and would continue to recruit me.

However, Geiger knew the odds were against him becoming a Spartan.

"I knew they had a couple of walk-ons and other players they needed to evaluate," explained Geiger. "Because of their scholarship situation they have such a small class. So they went through their entire season and it just happened there was some turmoil at Boston College who I was previously committed to.

"So I got on the phone with Coach (Mark) Dantonio and he offered me a scholarship about two weeks ago and I visited Saturday. After meeting with some academic advisors I sat down with Coach Dantonio and we talked about unrelated things and families. He asked if I had any questions left or anything about Michigan State and I asked him how soon I could commit.

"Coach Dantonio was great as he doesn't want to force kids to commit and he wants kids to choose Michigan State. So he was kind of surprised by me asking the question and I told him I wanted to be a Spartan today. He was real excited."

For Geiger the chance to become a Spartan fulfills a lifelong dream.

"I grew up watching Big Ten football," said Geiger. "So I'm very familiar with it and it's kind of always been a lifelong dream. I also have an aunt, who is my god mother who lives in East Lansing. So it will be great to have so much family around me and be close to home."

Geiger will join many of the Spartans 2013 recruiting class in mid January to take his official visit with Michigan State.
