Holmes Ready To Battle

With the departure of standout running back Le'Veon Bell to the NFL. Michigan State running back pledge Gerald Holmes used his official visit to learn more about his chances of playing early in the Spartans offense in 2013. Holmes talked with SpartanDigest.com about his visit and more.

Gerald Holmes arrival on Michigan State's campus this summer will have many Spartans paying close attention to the freshman running back from Flint (Mich.) Carman-Ainsworth High School.

Holmes spent this past weekend joined by his soon to be new teammates on campus as the Spartans tried something new in getting all their pledges on campus at the same time.

"My official visit went real good," said Holmes. "I enjoyed myself basically at my new home and got to hang out with all my future teammates in the process. So it was great as our bond came quick on the first night. A few of us had already been talking with each other on Twitter and by text message, but when we all got there we all bonded with ease."

The highlight for many of the soon to be signed Spartans came on Saturday night when they watched Tom Izzo's basketball Spartans knock off Ohio State.

"It was amazing being there for the Ohio State game," said Holmes. "I've been to a couple of other games over the past year and didn't really know anybody. But to be there now with everybody else it was like being with my family."

Holmes soon learned the Spartan way from his host.

"Mark Meyers was my host," said Holmes. "He didn't really say too much other than be ready to work and to blow up."

With Bell's early departure Holmes knows he'll be given a chance to show his skills early.

"I have a good chance to play early as I'm one of the bigger backs," explained Holmes. "I'm one of the purer backs who just play running back coming in. So basically coming in knowing I'll have a chance to play I know I've got to come ready to work hard and work my way in there by remaining focused and wanting to get the job done. I know this is a big opportunity."

Holmes meeting with Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio left little doubt about the chances in front of him.

"My meeting was good with Coach D," said Holmes. "We had a general conversation and he let me know the interest they have in me and telling me they need someone to come in and fill the spot. So to get the job done I need to be ready.

"Time has gone by so fast. It seems like just yesterday I started talking with Coach D and I can't believe I'm at this point in my life at a big Division One school with other elite athletes and have a chance to play with these other great athletes."

All Spartan fans will be watching closely come August when Holmes will get his first chance to show he's got the make-up to be a big time power back in the Spartans offensive attack.
