Here is our initial thoughts on the newest member of the Spartans 2014 recruiting class.
WHAT TO LIKE
Great physical size give Chris Durkin the ability to run with power or make any strong arm throws needed at the college level. The Spartans had targeted a handful of quarterbacks in the 2014 class and when Durkin was ready to pledge Mark Dantonio and his staff knew they had a quarterback capable of doing anything needed in the Spartans offensive attack.
WHAT MAY BE A CONCERN
Durkin is not a finished product but shows all the tools needed to play at a high level. The risk of getting such an early pledge is that of holding on until signing day. More programs will continue to look at Durkin as he shows to be one of the best in the Midwest. However, in talks with his family they seem set on being solid in the commitment. Biggest area of concern will be in his development of becoming a more consistent quarterback and improving his touch.
Getting a pledge this early will allow the Spartans to have a natural field leader heading up their recruiting efforts in the coming months. As we've seen each year, players recruit other top players and Durkin will be one who can help generate some excitement about the Spartans future.
On the field Durkin has the skill set to compete and it will be interesting to see how he develops early in his career pushing to get on the field. Very competitive player who will not rest on being a back-up.
