Indispensable Spartan #21

Spartan Digest is back with our annual look at the most important Spartans for the upcoming season. Each year we come up with a different theme and this year we'll look at the 30 most indispensable Spartans in 2013. Who is at No. 21?

Michigan State saw George Perles take the field as head coach 30-years ago. Spartan Digest recognizes Perles with this seasons 30 Most Indispensable Spartans with a look at those members of the football team we feel will have major roles if the Spartans are to have success on the field.

Riley Bullough – MSU Redshirt Freshman

Gerald Holmes – Flint (Mich) Carman-Ainsworth HS

R.J. Shelton – Beaver Dam (WI) Beaver Dam HS

Delton Williams – Erie (Pa.) Cathedral Prep HS

Position: Running Back

Experience: Freshmen

2012 Season: Three were very successful high school seniors last season and enter Michigan State with a chance to grab early playing time while the other saw his spring possibly change the direction of his career. .

Strengths: Each back has their own set of strengths as Riley, Holmes and Williams are true power backs with Shelton being more shifty.

Weaknesses: Three have not seen the speed of a college game up close and will be tested early in camp to see how they adjust. Bullough enjoyed reps during spring that could see him have the early edge.

Overall: Things could go totally different for each of these four players as Williams could see himself placed on defense instead of offense. Holmes will look to fill the shoes of the departed Le'Veon Bell early but may not be ready to take the pounding required out of an every down back. Shelton will be looked upon to fill a few roles early if he's to see the field. Bullough could see early reps as a back until someone else steps forward. All four have a chance to be the one freshman to earn early playing time and help the Spartans biggest weakness going into camp at running back.
