2012 Season: Mumphery is the player to watch as he led the Spartans in receptions (42) last season and was second in receiving yards. It will be a long time before true Spartan fans forget Mumphery's 29-yard touchdown reception against Ohio State when he broke several tackles before diving into the end zone.
Fowler led the Spartans in receiving yards (524) last season and trailed Mumphery for the team lead in receptions (41).
Many felt Arnett was going to come in and contribute right away after being ruled eligible to play after his transfer from Tennessee. However, Arnett saw action in seven games pulling down only three catches.
Strengths: The physical size and strengths of Mumphery and Fowler can cause match-up problems for defenders and both players have shown the ability to catch the ball. However, there was still times when both players had drops like many of the other Spartan receivers and that must be cleaned up. Arnett is a different player who should feel more relaxed in his second season with the Spartans and can provide a change of pace with his quick burst.
Overall: The Spartans should be strong at the Z-receiver position with three players capable of making plays. Look for Mumphery and Fowler to get the bulk of the load with Arnett adding a solid third member at the position. Fans should not be worried about this position and we would not be surprised if the three combine for over 100-catches and over 1,000 yards with double-digit touchdowns.
