Indispensable Spartan #16

Spartan Digest is back with our annual look at the most important Spartans for the upcoming season. Each year we come up with a different theme and this year we'll look at the 30 most indispensable Spartans in 2013.

Michigan State saw George Perles take the field as head coach 30-years ago. Spartan Digest recognizes Perles with this seasons 30 Most Indispensable Spartans with a look at those members of the football team we feel will have major roles if the Spartans are to have success on the field.

Here is #16

Skyler Burkland

HT: 6-7 WT: 315

Position: Offensive Tackle

Experience: Two-time letter winner

2012 Season: Burkland returned after missing the majority of the 2011 season but missed the first game of the season due to a hand injury. After his return in week two, the Ohio native would finish the season with 11 starts at right tackles leading the Spartans with 58 knockdowns.

Strengths: Has great physical size and the ability to play on the left or right side of the line. Also brings big-game experience.

Weaknesses: Injuries have hampered Burkland in his overall development the past two seasons and talk since late spring has been of him retiring from the game.

Overall: While many feel Burkland has already played his final game for the Spartans, we feel he'll return to give things at least one more run. There is no question the number of injuries suffered during his career may have dampened his spirit, however, having known the massive tackle since his high school days, we are extremely confident he's set to return for 2013 and the reason he's on our list.
