In typical Mark Dantonio fashion, the defense captured the first major scrimmage of the preseason 28-22 and may have answered a few key questions being asked by the Spartan faithful.
Major Work Done
The Spartans ran off 143 total plays during the two-hour, 15-minutre scrimmage in Spartan Stadium.
The Spartans used four quarterbacks during the scrimmage combining to complete 37-of-55 passes for 479 yards and four touchdowns. Both Andrew Maxwell and Connor Cook completed 13 passes on the day with Cook hitting on a higher percentage while Maxwell passed for more yardage and a 19-yard touchdown to MacGarrett Kings.
Tyler O'Connor threw two touchdowns going 7-of-9 for 74 yards while true freshman Damion Terry complete 4-of7 passes for 101 yards and a 67-yard touchdown to Matt Macksood against mostly the Spartans freshman defense.
Run Game Work In Progress
The Spartans used four running backs on the day with each having at least seven carriers on the day. Gerald Homles, Jeremy Langford and Nick Hill combined for 110-yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns.
Spread The Wealth
The Spartans saw five receivers combine for four touchdowns on the day with Bennie Fowler leading the Spartans with two on five receptions for 65 yards. Andre Sims Jr. pulled down five balls for 60-yards and Aaron Burbridge would get four catches of his own for another 24-yards.
Jones Rush Lead Way
Marcus Rush and Taiwan Jones combined for 12 tackles with Rush posting two sacks and Jones with two tackles for loss. However, it was Jones who had the big play when he scooped up a fumble and ran it back 14 yards for a score.
