Chewins enjoys MSU visit

Clarkston junior tight end spent time talking with coaches and more during visit on 'Spartan Day.'

The Michigan State coaches had plenty of chances to see Clarkston junior tight end Cole Chewins this summer.

Chewins camped at Michigan State twice, as well as at Sound Mind Sound Body.

The 6-foot-7, 209-pound tight end came back to East Lansing on Wednesday for "Spartan Day" with his teammate, 2014 MSU commit David Beedle.

"(Wednesday) went great," Chewins said. "I really liked watching practice and sitting through the team meetings."

He also spent time talking with a variety of Spartans coaches.

"I talked a lot with the coaches and got to build my relationships with them," he said. "When we had lunch I got talk to sit down and talk with Coach Dantonio. Then I talked with Coach Salem, Coach Blackwell, Coach Bollman and Coach Staten for a while, too.

"They would really like me to make it out for a game this fall."

As part of the "Spartan Day," head basketball coach Tom Izzo came and talked with the recruits on campus. Chewins said it was great to see how other coaches support each other in the athletic department.

"It was really cool to talk with (Izzo)," he said. "He was really friendly. He invited me to come out to a basketball game this winter as part of the recruiting process."

He said that it was awesome to come visit MSU with Beedle, who he has been playing football with since they were about 10.

"He told me a lot of the coaches have been talking to him about me, which I am excited about," Chewins said. "He talked to me about how the coaches really make you feel at home when you are in East Lansing. I can see that because they have always treated me well."

Chewins said he looks forward to being able to talk with the coaches more easily once September 1 passes. (College coaches are limited in contact with recruits prior to September 1 of their junior year.)

He also has been hearing from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Tennessee, Georgia Tech and Bowling Green.
