Five Questions: Week Two

A look at five questions Michigan State fans should consider as the Spartans head into the next week of preseason camp following the first jersey scrimmage that saw the defense win 28-22.

As the Spartans get ready to head into their next week of preseason camp, here are five questions to ponder until the team scrimmages again.

QUESTION ONE

Did Gerald Holmes step forward in the battle for reps at running back?

Some feel Holmes may have been the standout of the Spartans first jersey scrimmage. However, with Riley Bullough sitting out the scrimmage, it is way too soon to know if Holmes can become a featured back early.

QUESTION TWO

When will Riley Bullough be back full go?

One would have to think if Bullough is out for any length of time, others will be forced to step forward to fill his spot changing some of the early thoughts of the coaching staff moving the linebacker over to running back fulltime.

QUESTION THREE

How close is the quarterback competition heading into another week?

Combined the combination of Andrew Maxwell and Connor Cook completed 26 passes out of the 37 completions made Saturday. Cook hit on a higher percentage in the scrimmage and talk is sure to continue if he does the same in the next go around. Does talk start to creep into the mind of Spartan fans that the staff should look to move on to the younger quarterback?

QUESTION FOUR

Have the Spartans receiving corps turned the corner?

Last season the many dropped passes left Spartan fans scratching their heads if the program had a coaching issue at the position or a player issue. Did Saturday's performance silence some of the critics?

QUESTION FIVE

Can the defense be as good as last season's?

Early in camp those who have had a chance to see the team up close is talking this year's defense has better depth and the ability to be the best yet under Mark Dantonio.
