With the 11th annual "Meet The Spartans" scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Spartan Stadium, Andrew Maxwell said he remembers going to a similar event from his childhood.
"I grew up in Midland and the Lions used to have training camp at Saginaw Valley – 25 minutes away," Maxwell said. "We used to go and take preschool field trips over there.
"I can remember being that age, where you don't care who it is, whether it's Luther Ellis or Barry Sanders or whoever, you don't care as long as they have a Lions jersey on and they're a player and you're 5 years old."
For Maxwell, the impact and the look on a kid's face is why he enjoys the annual event.
"Just to see the impact we can have on kids and see the joy that we can bring them," he said. "To be able to give back just by simply smiling and asking them how their day is going and signing a hat. To kind of have that impact is special and something that I really appreciate."
'Meet The Spartans' is free for fans of all ages. Members of the 2013 football team and head coach Mark Dantonio will be available for autographs in the south concourse of Spartan Stadium.
Parking is free in Lots 79 and 62, with stadium gates B and C open at 4:30 p.m. Offensive players will be available for autographs from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and defensive players from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Fans are limited to one autograph per person and requests for photos cannot be accommodated.
