Five Answers: Week Two

The answers to our five questions posed prior to Michigan State's second week of the preseason.

We posed five questions prior to Michigan State starting their second full week and now look for some answers.

Did Gerald Holmes step forward in the battle for reps at running back?

No! He held his own during the second week and had a solid scrimmage but Jeremy Langford may see the early workload with Mark Dantonio looking ready to go running back by committee early and playing the hot hand.

When will Riley Bullough be back full go?

The jury is still out on this one and hopefully is answered soon as Bullough looked ready to bust out as a running back.

How close is the quarterback competition heading into another week?

On paper this is a four-man race with freshman Damion Terry pushing Dantonio to look at playing the true freshman. While almost always conservative in his approach, Dantonio has to see how the offense responded in the second scrimmage. In the end we still feel he'll look towards Maxwell and Cook first then Tyler O'Connor before Terry.

Have the Spartans receiving corps turned the corner?

The stats from Saturday look solid as four receivers made the stat sheet with six touchdowns.

Can the defense be as good as last season's?

Yes, despite losing the jersey scrimmage on Saturday, this defense has a chance to be just as good as last seasons. Some new key members must step up and play like they are capable of playing, but overall there is plenty of depth for the Spartans to rotate at each position without losing too much talent.
