Notebook: Williams, Holmes likely to redshirt

Freshmen running backs working on scout team, plus the status of many injured players including Lawrence Thomas.

Michigan State opened fall camp with freshmen in the mix to play at running back.

Now, it appears both Delton Williams and Gerald Holmes will redshirt this season.

"Delton is a very good running back, as is Gerald Holmes a very good running back," offensive coordinator Dave Warner said. "It just so happens that right now we feel good about the three guys that are playing. As of right now there's no need for him, but he's a very good football player whether he plays running back or linebacker or whatever."

Head coach Mark Dantonio said Tuesday that Williams had worked with the scout team at linebacker leading up to South Florida, which in part was because freshman linebacker Jon Reschke was out with an ankle injury.

"He is a very good football," Dantonio said. "He's not surpassed those other three because of knowledge right now. Whether he plays linebacker or whether he plays tailback is really up in the air. He's just a good football player."

Robinson dealt with consequences of legal issue

Redshirt freshman cornerback Ezra Robinson was arrested for underage drinking and driving in late July and will be sentenced Monday.

Defensive backs coach Harlon Barnett said Wednesday that Robinson's legal issue impacted his reps early in fall camp.

"It happened a while ago, so we've been through that process," Barnett said. "Early on but now everything has moved on. He's earned his way back to where he needs to be and continues to work hard and get better."

Spartans to know more about Thomas soon

Defensive tackle Lawrence Thomas missed fall camp with an undisclosed injury, but Dantonio said they should know his status soon.

"We are going to find that out probably next week," Dantonio said. "We will find that out next week. So hopefully (his return) is coming to fruition."

Allen available this week

Sophomore offensive lineman Jack Allen missed the first two games of the season, but Dantonio said he is available this week to play.

"He practiced last week late in the week," Dantonio said. "We'll see how he does this week. But I felt like it was important to have him back on the depth chart because there's a possibility he may play. We'll probably have to wait till today and tomorrow just to see how he practices, those type of things."

Madaris working back from injury

Redshirt freshman Monty Madaris missed time last fall camp with an ankle injury and was injured again this fall.

"He's been limited all camp with an injury," Dantonio said. "We're trying to work through that injury. He's not been able to get many days of camp. He's pretty much been out. Practiced maybe four times.

"It's discouraging because he could be a good player."
