With several former Crusaders wearing Spartan jerseys currently and one of the programs all-time greats, Greg Jones having come from the prep program the first year Mark Dantonio took over the Big Ten program. Respect between the two programs is strong.
Class of 2015 defensive tackle Elijah Taylor is learning firsthand about the strong connections between the two.
"Coach (Harlon) Barnett is a really good dude and I respect him a lot," said Taylor. "Coach (Mark) Dantonio, I really like him too and respect him a lot also. I know players who have gone to Michigan State and they really get on me a lot about coming up there to see games and visit with them.
"I keep in contact with Coach Barnett a lot since he's my recruiting coach and I try to keep in contact with defensive line coach Ron Burton a little bit. I'm starting to build a bigger relationship with him as it goes on, but since the season started; I've not really been able to build that much of a relationship."
Planning to visit the Spartans for their battle against rival Michigan in early November, Taylor hopes to learn more about the university the next time he visits.
"I really didn't get to see their campus that much," he said. "But I did get to see their football facilities and really like their stadium a lot."
Now receiving interest from several major programs, how does Taylor now look at the Spartans early offer?
"I treat all offers the same no matter when they offer," he explained. "I thank them for offering me every time they do and respect that they offered me early. The Michigan State offer does gain a little advantage because they have so much trust in me and welcomed me as a player."
Another advantage the Spartans may have going for them is Taylor has seen others take the same path he is on with success in East Lansing. Does having former teammates and those from Moeller intrigue him more about the Spartans?
"Yes, it does intrigue me," said Taylor. "It shows that Michigan State has something special up there and that they really love Moeller guys. It shows me they really help people and having something in common being from Moeller shows me they can also give me the ability to move on and do something special in college."
