Notebook: Thomas making progress

Sophomore defensive tackle working back from injury, might play at Iowa.

Michigan State sophomore defensive tackle Lawrence Thomas has been working his way back from an injury and his status has become a weekly question for Dantonio.

On Tuesday, Dantonio said Thomas is making progress and isn't sure if he will play at Iowa.

"We'll see where he's at this week, but he is making progress," he said. "He's working out. Can he get in pads this week? That will define whether he makes the trip or not. He's getting closer, so we just have to progress him now."

No. 2 QB depends on situation

Senior Andrew Maxwell came in for the final drive of the Notre Dame game, but Maxwell and redshirt freshman Tyler O'Connor are listed as "OR" at the No. 2 quarterback spot.

Dantonio said O'Connor being the No. 2 will depend on how he practices.

"Is he the No. 2? Is he the No. 3? It depends on who he practices and what the situation is probably in the game," Dantonio said. "I'm impressed with Tyler as well at times, but the consistency, and, again, he's a redshirt freshman, so you have some of those same problems with him."

"Just win, baby"

With a pair of college coaches fired after the weekend and Texas great Earl Campbell saying it's time for Mack Brown to go at UT, college coaching is as fluid as ever.

Dantonio said sometimes coaches can't control everything even when they try and it's a sign of the times.

"I guess it says that just win, baby, first of all," Dantonio said. "It's a fickle society. We all know that. Patience is a virtue.

"I really just keep doing my job. I think that's all we can do is work your job the best you can."
