Thomas started his career at linebacker, moved to defensive end, then to fullback, where he played last season. This year, he has been a defensive tackle, but has been out with an injury.
Coach Mark Dantonio said Tuesday that the reason for having Thomas at defensive end is "it's probably a bit easier to play himself back into defensive tackle."
He also said that Thomas practiced last week for the first time in full.
"We need to get him some live reps, active reps," Dantonio said. "I thought he could have possibly played on Saturday, but the way the game just went with the whole nature of it, we decided not to play him. ... It's time now. I think he needs to play."
Dantonio also said it isn't out of the question that Thomas could play on offense, too.
Thomas had seven receptions for 78 yards last year.
