Geiger clutch in first experience against UM

Freshman kicker goes 3 for 3 on field goals in 29-6 win.

Playing in a rivalry game brings a lot of pressure for any player.

It brings even more to a kicker – and then more to a kicker who is a true freshman, but that didn't phase Michigan State kicker Michael Geiger.

"There's pressure on a young man at this level, for a first-time Michigan game," he said. "Keep in mind, he hadn't kicked a field goal since the Iowa game, hadn't attempted one.

"So to come in a kick two for two like that, it got his confidence going. He believes in himself. The football team believes in him as well and it was big."

Keeping his composure through the week, and Geiger said he knew he had to take advantage when his number is called.

"It's a lot of mental reps, getting yourself mentally focused," Geiger said. "Just knowing that you're only going to be on the field for 5 or 6 seconds, so you got to take advantage when you're out there, make the play when you can and seize your opportunity."

Geiger finished the day with three field goals and two extra points – a third was blocked.

"It feels great," he said. "No matter what's happening in the game you know you got to be ready for whatever situation might arise. Today, I was lucky to get a couple opportunities and score some points for our team."

Performing well is something Geiger is accustomed to. He has only missed one field goal for the season and is nine of 10 this season with 46 total points.

"It definitely has been a journey," Geiger said. "I feel like it's coming around full swing. I'm just glad that I've been able to contribute for this team and that's the ultimate goal.

"It's been a great journey."
