With its 78-62 win at Illinois, the Spartans set the record for the best start to a season in school history in improving their record to 17-1.

Gary Harris led the way for Michigan State with 23 points.

Denzel Valentine recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Keith Appling also hit double-digits with 15 points and Matt Costello tied a career-high with eight points. Costello also had a career-high six blocks.

The Spartans closed the first half on a 21-9 run and closed the game on a 19-9 run.

They improved to 4-0 on the road in conference play.
