Payne expected to miss sixth game in a row

Senior forward increasing running, Izzo hopes to have him back running on the court soon.

Michigan State's Adreian Payne isn't back yet, but Tom Izzo is hopeful to have his star forward back in the near future.

The coach said the senior's odds of playing at Iowa on Tuesday are "slim to none to none."

He has been increasing his running as he spent time on a treadmill Sunday at 80 percent of his weight for the first time – up from 60 last week.

"I'm hoping by the middle of the week that he's running on hardwood," Izzo said. "I'm hoping by the end of the week he's starting to cut and jump. I'm hoping by the end of next week, he's ready to go full go. …

"Moving forward, I think it starts taking steps upward."

Izzo said Payne had experienced some soreness from running lately, but pointed to the possibility the pain is from muscles he hasn't been using or just part of the injury.

"It seems to be more just part of the pain of getting back," Izzo said.

Payne has missed the past five games, in which Michigan State is 4-1 with the lone loss coming Saturday against Michigan.
