Final Evaluation: Matt Sokol

Just days away from National Signing Day, Spartan Digest gives our final evaluations on the members of the 2014 Michigan State recruiting class. This is not a star ranking, but a look at a prospects overall physical ability and on field ability.

The secret to the success Michigan State has enjoyed since Mark Dantonio took over the Spartans football programs has been finding athletes who fit their style of play and by developing players who have yet to reach their full potential.

In our final evaluation series, we look at more than just highlight film as we evaluate athletic ability and future potential.

We work on a 1-to-5 scale in each area with five being the highest grade a prospect can receive.

Prospect needs major work in area: = 1
Prospect rough on the edges in area: = 2
Prospect is where he should be in area: = 3
Prospect shows major promise in area: = 4
Prospect is above average in area: = 5

Matt Sokol brings the height teams want from their tight end. The converted quarterback showed speed wasn't an issue in the summer during the camps he attended. Will need to get physically bigger and with his early enrollment we should see a different player in the spring. Grade: 4

Sokol shows solid quickness to go with the agility and balance you expected from a receiver. Quarterbacks for the most part are the best athlete on a team and Sokol has shown a high level of athletic ability combining all three traits in this category. Grade: 4

We like the flexibility we saw in the summer during camps and feel he's got the frame to become more explosive in the future. Work in the Spartans strength program will take care of the physical strength needed to play in the Big Ten. Grade: 3

This summer Sokol answered questions about him being able to move from quarterback to tight end showing the ability to get open when running routes against high level of competition and impressing the Spartan coaching staff. We feel Sokol's future is extremely bright and while there is still work needed to his overall game, his early enrollment will give him a chance to advance his skill set early and we expect big things out of him in the future. Grade: 4
