Robert Bowers – Columbus (Ohio) Walnut Ridge defensive end
Height, weight: 6-foot-5, 210 pounds
Commitment date: August 3, 2013
Why Michigan State: "I told Coach Dantonio straight up that I love Michigan State. I told him I would love to come here and work hard and earn a spot. I also said to him, I had been to a lot of schools and didn't feel comfortable at them. But every time I came to Michigan State, there was a lot of love and I felt comfortable with how the coaches reached out to you."
Bowers didn't play as a senior because of shoulder surgery, but he was a player the Spartans staff locked in on relatively early in the process to come in as a rush end.
He has more than just flashes of current MSU defensive end Demetrius Cooper, who redshirted this season. Cooper also was injured in his high school career and came to East Lansing with a long, lanky frame, but freakish athleticism. Bowers is a similar defensive end to Cooper and has the potential to be a terror off the edge.
As he gets stronger and becomes more polished during a redshirt year, Bowers should develop nicely.
Between Bowers and Montez Sweat, the Spartans added athleticism to their defensive end group.
