Signing Day Capsule: Vayante Copeland

Dayton (Ohio) Marshall set to continue a legacy of song cornerback play in East Lansing as he brings the athleticism and speed to make a splash -- maybe early in his career?

Vayante Copeland – Dayton (Ohio) Marshall cornerback

Height, weight: 5-foot-11, 180 pounds

Commitment date: June 16, 2013

Why Michigan State:"It was the first time I visited campus. I've always liked Michigan State since the first time I met with Coach (Harlon) Barnett and then Coach (Mark) Dantonio. But when I got to campus I could see it was laid out real nice and the stadium and facilities were great. The guide we had really got deep into everything and I liked how everything is spread out but not too far from where the stadium is. But I just really liked the campus and the people. That really caught my eye."

The Skinny

A Division 3 all-state selection and the co-defensive player of the year picked Michigan State after they were one of the first major schools to offer him. He proved why throughout the season as he excelled on special teams, offense and defense.

Cornerback will be his position at Michigan State and he looks to be another strong future corner in East Lansing.

He is a player that could come in like Darian Hicks did out of Solon, Ohio, last season to be a backup as a true freshman while seeing reps on special teams, but the Spartans are deep in the secondary and that likely wouldn't be needed.

As is the case with almost all players in the incoming class – and any incoming class – adding some bulk will be important for Copeland, but his playmaking ability, speed and athleticism make him a solid prospect.
