Deon Drake – Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech linebacker
Height, weight: 6-foot-1, 210 pounds
Commitment date: September 23, 2012
Why Michigan State: "It's a great fit. The education is great, the football is great, and being at the stadium during the Boise State game was great as I was able to see their defense make some great plays. I could picture myself being a big impact player there. I like how the linebackers play as they are disciplined and I like how they read the offensive line. The coaches see me at the SAM linebacker position."
Like his fellow linebacker commitment Byron Bullough, Drake was an early member of the Michigan State class. But Drake's commitment meant a little bit more than that.
Drake was the first Cass Tech commitment in more than a decade for the Spartans and offensive tackle Dennis Finley followed shortly after. The longtime Michigan pipeline proved it could send talent to East Lansing, too, and Drake opened that door as MSU was the school he wanted to attend.
He missed part of his senior year recovering from knee surgery, but showed his ability as a junior and received strong Big Ten attention and offers.
With Bullough and Chris Frey, he makes up a trio of linebackers that adds depth to the MSU defense and talent moving forward. He likely will redshirt as he gets acclimated to the college game and as he continues to pick back up the speed of the game after surgery.
