Signing Day Capsule: Matt Morrissey

Lincolnshire (Ill.) Stevenson athlete could factor into the future at MSU at multiple spots after earning Illinois Class 8A all-state honors as a senior.

Matt Morrissey – Lincolnshire (Ill.) Stevenson athlete

Height, weight: 6-foot-3, 180 pounds

Commitment date: July 15, 2013

Why Michigan State:"I felt that it was the best fit for me and fell in love with the Michigan State program. … It's awesome to play for the same school my father did."

The Skinny

Morrissey brings as much versatility to the 2014 class as anyone – right up there with Montae Nicholson, although admittedly Nicholson is a better prospect at this time. He also brings a familiar name to East Lansing, as his father, Jim, was a Spartan and his sister, Anna, is on the women's basketball team.

The 6-foot-3 athlete made plenty of plays as a wide receiver on his way to first-team all-state honors in Illinois' Class 8A. He also excelled at safety and brings fantastic instincts to the position. He also could add the weight to play linebacker and that might be more likely than safety at the college level for him.

He was recruited as an athlete, but wide receiver could be the spot that Morrissey starts his career as the Spartans didn't bring in any defined wide receivers in the 2014 class.

At either position, a redshirt year seems likely for Morrissey as at any of the three positions he could play, the Spartans figure not to need any immediate contributions.
