Chris Frey Jr – Columbus (Ohio) Upper Arlington linebacker
Height, weight: 6-foot-2, 215 pounds
Commitment date: May 15, 2013
Why Michigan State: "The coaching staff is very stable and I don't see them going anywhere. Coach (Mark) Dantonio is an amazing man, and a great coach, so I'm honored to play for him. I had a lot of great offers, but Michigan State stood out far and away above the others."
Joining tight end Matt Sokol as early enrollees, Frey was long ago set up to arrive early on campus. Knowing it could be an advantage, he started prepping to graduate early to get to campus quickly. Once he bulked up and impressed Michigan State, it became clear East Lansing would be his home a semester early.
Once he committed, Frey worked hard to get other kids committed to Michigan State. He could be credited with an assist on defensive end Robert Bowers and worked hard on wide receiver J.J. Pinckney when he was still an MSU target.
A solid Ohio linebacker that likely will fit into the SAM spot like Denicos Allen, Frey brings quickness and tenacity off the edge. He is a gritty player – which is exactly what MSU likes to have.
With the lack of depth at linebacker right now – which depends in part on if Delton Williams slides back over and which spot Shane Jones occupies – Frey could compete for reps on special teams and as a backup early in his career.
