Signing Day Capsule: T.J. Harrell

Tampa (Fla.) Catholic athlete gives Michigan State options on both sides of the ball as a linebacker/safety on defense and running back on offense -- and a big signing day coup.

T.J. Harrell – Tampa (Fla.) Catholic athlete

Height, weight: 6-foot, 205 pounds

Commitment date: February 5, 2014

Why Michigan State:"Mainly, it's because I felt that with the family connections, the coaching staff that they have, the good year that they had, I really felt like Michigan State would be a really good fit for me."

The Skinny

Who doesn't love a signing day commitment? As Michigan State works its way up the college football world, it could become a more common occurrence.

Harrell is yet another player the Spartans brought in that can play multiple positions and could be a contributor at any one of them. The athlete excelled as a safety, linebacker and running back at the high school level and figures to start his career at Michigan State as either a running back or safety.

The Spartans targeted Harrell early in the process and despite a very long recruitment, stuck near or at the top most of the way through over SEC offers and in-state offers.

Harrell brings speed and physicality in his game at all positions and looks like he is destined for a very good career at Michigan State.

All positions he figures to factor into likely won't need immediate contributions, so a redshirt is probably in Harrell's immediate future. Between him and Montae Nicholson, though, the Spartans added some serious athleticism and versatility.
