Signing Day Capsule: Miguel Machado

Michigan State adds a junior college offensive tackle late on signing day to round out the offensive line class with five members.

The Skinny

The Spartans added Machado late on signing day to give the offensive line a fifth member and a fourth tackle – much needed after bringing in only Dennis Finley last season. Depth has improved and adding a pair of junior college players, possibly early contributors increased.

Machado gives the Spartans an athletic option at offensive tackle moving forward, similar to what Fou Fonoti did when came to East Lansing. He appears to be a little bit more raw than Fonoti at the time, but has the frame to put on a little more muscle.

He plays with a solid base most of time, but sometimes allows his feet to be too far apart and that technique in pass blocking will be a point of emphasis for him. Run blocking is where he excels as he drives his feet and uses his lower body to push downfield.

The right tackle spot is open at Michigan State right now and between Machado and expected signee David Hedelin, it could be a one of the junior college transfers that steps in and plays – but certainly competes. How quickly Machado can pick up the offense and adapt will go far in what his impact is.
