Columbus (Ohio) Walnut Ridge junior Anthony McKee got some news he had been waiting for Wednesday.
The linebacker finally got word he had a Michigan State offer.
"I actually just got off the phone with Coach (Mike) Tressel and he was telling me that their recruiting coordinator was telling him that he was reading an article on me and how I said in it that I didn't have an offer," McKee said. "He was making sure he called and told me that I do have an offer from them."
The Spartans already were a team prominently on McKee's mind, though, in large part because of his high school teammate being a 2014 signee.
"At first, I knew about Michigan State but then we have a player at my school, Robert Bowers, and he's a commit to Michigan State and he just puts it in my face every day," McKee said. "He just tells me how great it is and how fun it is up there and why he likes it and he made me start thinking more about it."
McKee and Bowers have played together since little league and he said it would be "a good deal" to keep playing together.
The way Michigan State plays defense and how he could fit in has made an impact on McKee.
"I went to the game when they played Michigan," he said. "I remember the atmosphere. It was crazy and their defense performance was amazing. They play really good up there."
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound linebacker also said his relationship with Tressel is something he likes in Michigan State.
"The first time I met him was when I was a freshman," he said. "He has been through my school a lot. Coach (Mark) Dantonio has been through a few times for Bowers. I really like Tressel. He's a good guy and I've known him for a long time."
He hopes to make it up to East Lansing soon with Bowers during the spring.
"Bowers was trying to get up there, too, and I was maybe going to ride with him and we were going to get to one," he said.
As for the other schools he is waiting on an offer from, McKee said there are some ACC, Big Ten and SEC schools he hopes to hear more from.
He also hopes to start narrowing things down in the near future.
"I want to have a list done sometime before the summer," he said. "I wanna be maybe committed before the season starts."
He also holds offers from Tennessee, West Virginia, Kentucky, Arkansas, Cincinnati and a handful of Big Ten offers.
