Michigan State jumps up Gonzalez' list

Spartans offer New Jersey lineman on Tuesday, which pushed them up near the top of his list of favorite schools immediately. He talks why he already liked Michigan State and his other top schools.

All it took was an offer for Michigan State to rocket up Steven Gonzalez' list.

The Union City (N.J.) junior offensive lineman got that offer Tuesday and said he was happy about it.

"I liked Michigan State from the start, but they hadn't pulled the offer so I didn't really consider them too much," he said. "But now since they did offer, they jumped to No. 3 on my list and stuff. I'm really liking them."

Gonzalez, who has Ohio State and Penn State as his Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, said Michigan State is a great program and that is what had his interest from the start.

"It's a prestigious program as well in a great conference," he said. "It has good academics and they just won the Rose Bowl this year, which is another plus. Coach (Mark) Dantonio is building a great team."

The 6-foot-3, 290-pound offensive lineman said he talks with Spartans defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi a lot. He also said that Narduzzi told him they had offered him a while ago.

"I didn't think it was official when he told me," Gonzalez said. "I thought it was waiting to be confirmed. I have had the offer for a while, but I think it was just kind of confirmed on Tuesday."

Michigan State also pulled the trigger on his teammate, defensive back Daiquan Kelly. The pair has talked about playing together at the next level.

"Me and him have a couple offers together with the same schools, but to get it from a program like Michigan State at the same time, it's very honoring," he said.

Gonzalez has held Ohio State and Penn State as his top pair for a little while now and broke down why he likes each school.

Ohio State: "I really just like everything about them. I haven't visited the campus yet and I'm going to go in the spring. I think after the spring game I'm going to go. That's pretty much it. I haven't see a thing I don't like about Ohio State. I like the coaches. It's a prestigious program. I like everything about it."

Penn State: "Penn State is kind of the same thing it's just the coaches, I really haven't met them in person. I've been to the campus, but I haven't met the new coaching staff yet. I can't wait to meet them."

He hopes to visit Michigan State soon, as well.

"I'm definitely going to be considering making a visit up there now," he said. "I'm not sure when I'm going to do it, but I'm going to see."
