From a QB coach that worked out with former Spartan Andrew Maxwell to an encounter with the brother of MSU quarterbacks coach Brad Salem, the Phoenix (Ariz.) Pinnacle junior quarterback knows about the green and white.
He also wasn't too surprised when an offer came through last week.
"I've been in contact with them for a pretty long time and the coach (Salem) just told me to give him a call and I did and he told me they wanted to give me and offer," he said. "I still haven't been able to talk to (coach Mark) Dantonio yet, but I should be able to talk with him soon. I had been messaging them on Twitter for the past couple months so it wasn't out of the blue or anything."
He said his relationship with Salem is pretty good, but he also had a chance to meet his brother, Wade, through a program he does in high schools.
"He did it with our school so that was kind of where our connection got started," Lewerke said. "I have a pretty good relationship with Coach Salem."
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound quarterback spends time working with quarterback guru Dennis Gile, whom Maxwell worked out with in preparation for the NFL draft and Michigan State's pro day.
"He went up there to help at their pro day, so he told me a little bit about their facilities and said they were really nice," he said. "That was a plus."
Soon, Lewerke will see those facilities for himself and take in the rest that Michigan State has to offer – beyond the Rose Bowl win he already is aware of.
"I'm actually going to be up there the first weekend in April," he said. "I am hoping to be able to learn about their program more, see their campus, where I would be staying for the next four years or my life and their facilities pertaining to football and just talking with their coaches more."
"It was the first time I talked with their coaches over the phone," he said. "I was able to talk with their head coach, Will Muschamp, and he was the one that offered me. That was pretty big to be able to talk with him, too."
While in Michigan, Lewerke also will stop in Ann Arbor to visit Michigan. He hopes to make a visit to Gainesville to see Florida at some point, as well.
