Hawkins lands unexpected MSU offer

Camden (N.J.) wide receiver nets offer from the Spartans last week as they join Florida, South Carolina and Temple.

Brad Hawkins had not heard too much from Michigan State early in his recruitment, but that did not stop the Spartans from pulling the trigger and offering him last week.

"The head coach called my dad and my dad called me and that's how I knew," he said. "Then I saw it on Twitter."

The Camden (N.J.) sophomore wide receiver said he was excited about the offer, even if he doesn't know too much about the Spartans apart from watching them in the Rose Bowl.

"I don't really know too much about Michigan State," he said. "I think that they have good coaches and a good program that's about it."

The 6-foot-2 Hawkins already holds offers from Florida, South Carolina and Temple.

"They came in recently," he said. "Florida probably came in a month and a half ago, South Carolina came in a couple of weeks ago. Temple came in a while ago because they are right over the bridge from me."

More offers could come in soon as the likes of Michigan, West Virginia and Tennessee have been in contact.

"Coaches have been visiting and talking to my coaches but can't really talk to me because I'm a sophomore," he said. "They still go through my coach and my dad and my dad or my coach calls me when there is something going on.

"It's looking up and getting there."

In the meantime, Hawkins is focused on getting better for his coming junior season.

"I'm running track actually and playing a little 7 on 7," he said. "I'm going to camps and stuff, getting on the field after practice and going to the weight room."
