The Nacogdoches (Texas) cornerback had just seen contact with the Spartans start, but they quickly offered after seeing his film.
"They wanted to know if I was for sure interested and I was like, man, for sure," he said. "They just won the Rose Bowl and have the No. 1 defense in the nation, so for sure I would be interested.
"After that, I talked with Coach (Terry) Samuel who recruits my area and we talked for 15 minutes. It was a great talk and he let me know Michigan State was offering me."
The 6-foot-2, 170-pound corner said the offer meant a lot as it provided an opportunity to be a part of the nation's best defense.
His recruitment took off more and more after he decommitted from Ole Miss in mid-March. That and a couple big camp performances opened up eyes and got him the attention.
For now, he is just playing it out to see what more comes his way – schools like Alabama are interested. He hopes to put out a top 10 at the end of the school year and said Michigan State could be among them.
"They are the top defense in the country so I am going to definitely consider being a part of that," Lane said. "They will be around that group."
As he looks to narrow that list down, though, he knows what he is looking to find.
"To see what they do with defensive backs and see if I fit right in their scheme and defense," he said. "When I go on a visit, to see if I fit right in an atmosphere and if it all works for me."
